If you dont have squirrel or rat issues, direct plant the seeds exactly were you want the trees to grow. Do this while there is plenty of winter time left. About one to three inches below the soil. Chestnut saplings are tough enough to take care of themselves there after.

The chestnuts have a high germination rate for the second year in a row. Very satisficed and placing another order.

Ordered 3 pounds last year. Over 90% germination. Planted in 5 gallon pots and kept through a horrible summer only losing 8 plants. Will order more.

we plant about 50 a year. fall planting in sand bucket, dig up 2 weeks after crocus come up. put in peat moss in cage till plants are 12 inch. repot in 8 gallon plastic pots for the summer in wire enclosure. water all summer till 4 to 6 feet. go dormant in the fall after temperature drops to 60 or less at night. plant out in woods. spring time they take off growing like mad. still have a fight with some kind of worm that eats the leaves. also leaf roller weevils. I think we solved that this year with garlic spray day after each rain. rabbits were pretty bad this year and anything I planted last fall was not eaten. key is the woody stem. my first year I ordered 125 seeds expecting to get maybe 50. they all sprouted using this method. every year they all sprouted.

I ordered the premium seeds last year and got them into the fridge (in peet) in november. This was my first run at it. I had 56 seeds and 51 sprout. You cant ask for any more than that! All 51 grew but only 31 survived which was my fault as a novice, animals, and bad weather. I will be ordering more this year. Extremely happy with my order.

ordered 5 lbs of planting seed last November, places them into 3 separate 5 gal buckets with sand in layers with the bottom of the buckets drilled with 1/4″ holes for drainage. watered them and put lid on and set them in an unheated shed till this week April 12th, 2022 we see lots of sprouting happening. we will begin transplanting to individual containers for summer growing season. shipping was fast and they give you some helpful information with your order. we started checking on the seeds a few weeks ago and didnt see anything, seems like early april is the right timing for zone 6 in the Appalachian hills. buy a pound and try them. in 5 years you might be really happy you did.

I ordered a pound of the premium seeds and a pound of the xl seeds. Out of approx 80 seeds, only 9 developed a taproot. They were ordered late October, and placed in the refrigerator in the first week of November, so I’m not sure if this has something to do with it. Chestnuts are back in the fridge for another go, but not thrilled with a 10% germination rate thus far.
